Dear Flaming,

Amoot bil 5ubiz il-irani 7aar with labneh turkeeya or jibin farancee and veggies (lots of olives too).

That's all I have to say.

Except:

Anonymous and Cosimfree: Flamingoliya uses the term "3anis" sarcastically and cynically to show how awful and pitiful it is that these ridiculous archaic labels ever existed to get thrown onto women/girls heads in the first place and how they are still sadly used many times today to define Kuwaiti women... this is her form of social commentary on the plight that these women suffer.

Another term I hate is "mu6alaka" which more often than not, women who are divorced must use to define themselves officially and socially in our society. And it has a stigma that goes with it, although there is not a house/family in Kuwait that can now say it does not have a daughter that is one...sadly... Divorce is commonplace and has lost its shock value I guess...

I mean, for God's sake, does the term ever affect the social status of a Kuwaiti man? It definitely casts a pall on women in our society...no one really cares if a man is mu6alak.... or never found a woman to marry him and is a male "3anis" ( as if that would happen in Kuwait where a man can marry over and over again at any age and no one thinks twice about it as they do about a woman who is no longer 20 years old!)

I have to say I respected what you said about Kuwaiti women, Anonymous, and my hat goes off to you :) Bes tukfayn, laa tifhameen Flamingoliya ghala6.

MsB, who doesn't care anymore how old she is when she has a child or what it takes to raise them, just as long as God blesses her with one or two someday...

why is 3anis perceived negatively personally i just think it means being "single".
Is describing yourself "single" offensive??

Ms.Baker said...

A3sab-

"3anis" does not mean "single"

It means, a woman who has passed beyond the age of which she should have been married, and no one wanted her.

Not "moo mitzawja", which means "single"

MsB and her opinion...

Ms baker, is this definition from ilqamoos ilmu7ee6 walla ilqamoos ilmuneer? :-)
to some extent you have a point but i still think its how people perceive the word just like "mu6allaqa" and "divorcee". In arabic its perceived negatively but in english its not.

I love your sense of humour. One of the ways of making light of a deragatory term is to use it in this comical sense.
Keep up the great writing :)

3anis translation in the English dictionary is "spinster" aka old maid especially in England in the olden days (when referring to a woman who'd be working as a governess taking care of other people's children while the other women of the house where busy getting married and finding out that there husbands had a crush on the "spinster/old maid"...

So in my dictionary...3anis/spinster have more fun...lol...

This post is raw and moving despite the strength of character shown. Just beautifully written. And I agree with jewaira.

I enjoyed reading the discussion generated here and thanks for the encouraging compliments :)

I corrected it :P

im thinking flamingoleya doesnt want us to focus so much on the word 3anis.. as much on the story.. i think 3anis makes perfect sense.. even if the cicumstances are imperfect, the mindset is right.
